RICH FISHER'S WWHB-FM / WNEW-FM EXPERIENCE

WWHB-FM "The WNEW-FM Network"

WWHB-FM was a simulcaster of then Album Rocker WNEW-FM in New York City. WNEW's signal on 102.7 didn't cover Eastern Long Island, so they leased WWHB-107.1 to cover The Hamptons, North Shore, and Southern Connecticut. All WNEW-FM music and personalities originated at the main station in New York City. WWHB sold advertising time to local businesses around Long Island and inserted them over the 102.7 feed commercials (when the NYC advertisers didn't pay for both signals). WWHB had a van with the WNEW-107.1 logo on it, and they did live remotes from events around Long Island. My duties were to make and voice local spots on WWHB, as well as the many PSA's and promo's that the station ran. I also broadcasted live from clubs around The Hamptons and hosted WNEW night at a local nightspot. WNEW-FM stopped leasing 107.1 about a year after I left, and everybody saw it coming. Competition was tough, and when WBAB-102.3 started simulcasting on WHFM-95.3 in The Hamptons, it was over for the WNEW-FM Network. WNEW-FM was doing poorly on both frequencies, and eventually the station changed format on 102.7 as well. WWHB is now WLIR-FM, the former groundbreaking Alternative station that had to vacate the 92.7 frequency.
